この曲は、マンハッタン52丁目にあったジャズ･クラブ"バードランド"のオーナーの依頼で生まれました。当時このクラブで演奏するミュージシャンたちの多くは、ステージの最後に、エンディング・テーマとしてこの曲を演奏しながら、メンバー紹介をしていて、その様子が収められたライブ盤も多数あります。
“バード”はチャーリー･パーカーの愛称です。
